Sun Unleashes Powerful Solar Storm on Earth
Geomagnetic Storm Prompts Warnings and Precautions
Massive Solar Flare Captured by NASA's Observatory
The sun has unleashed a powerful solar flare that has triggered a geomagnetic storm on Earth. The storm, classified as a G4 (extreme) event, is expected to cause disruptions to power grids, navigation systems, and communications.
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured images of the solar flare, which occurred on Thursday, May 10, 2024. The flare was part of a series of solar storms that have been ongoing since May 2024.
The geomagnetic storm is caused by a cluster of sunspots on the solar surface. These sunspots are regions where the sun's magnetic field is particularly strong. When the magnetic field lines become twisted and tangled, they can release energy in the form of solar flares.
The current geomagnetic storm is the most severe since the Halloween storms of October 2003. Those storms caused blackouts and other disruptions in North America and Europe.
