A New Era For The Huskers

Matt Rhule Expects Nebraska Football’s Sideline Switch to Pay Off

A New Era for the Huskers

Head coach Matt Rhule is entering his second season at the helm of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. After a disappointing 4-8 campaign in 2022, Rhule is shaking things up in Lincoln, including a change on which sideline the team will be.

The Sideline Switch

For decades, Nebraska has traditionally occupied the east sideline of Memorial Stadium. However, starting with the 2023 season, the Huskers will move to the west sideline. Rhule believes this change will give his team several advantages.

Improved Communication

The west sideline is closer to the press box, allowing for better communication between coaches and players. This will be especially beneficial in noisy environments or during critical moments of the game.

Reduced Sun Exposure

The east sideline receives more sunlight during afternoon games, which can be draining for players. The west sideline will provide more shade, keeping the Huskers cooler and more comfortable throughout the contest.

Psychological Edge

Rhule believes the sideline switch will give his team a psychological edge. By taking the opposing team’s traditional home sideline, the Huskers can create an element of disruption and assert their dominance.

Proven Success

Rhule is not the first coach to implement a sideline switch. In recent years, several other Power 5 programs have made the same move, with positive results.

  • In 2018, LSU moved to the west sideline in Tiger Stadium and went on to win the national championship.
  • In 2021, Oklahoma moved to the west sideline in Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium and improved its record from 5-7 to 11-2.
  • In 2022, Florida State moved to the west sideline in Doak Campbell Stadium and finished 10-3, their best record since 2016.

Reason for Optimism

The Huskers have struggled in recent years, but there is reason for optimism under Rhule’s leadership. The team made significant strides in several key areas during the 2022 season, including:

  • Improved offensive production, averaging 27.4 points per game (up from 21.9 in 2021)
  • A more balanced attack, with a near-even split between rushing and passing yards
  • A stronger defense, allowing only 22.9 points per game (down from 29.3 in 2021)

With the addition of several talented transfers and the return of a number of key players, the Huskers are poised to make a significant leap forward in 2023.

Conclusion

Matt Rhule is confident that Nebraska Football’s sideline switch will pay off in a big way. If the Huskers can stay healthy and build on the progress they made in 2022, they could be a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten West this season.
